FIXED BRACES

WHEN ARE FIXED BRACES RECOMMENDED?
- Irregular tooth positioning causes problems as it is difficult to maintain oral hygiene, which later results in inflamed and red gums, gingivitis, and eventually periodontitis.
- The position of the teeth directly contributes to numerous cavities because food tends to get stuck in hard-to-reach areas.
- Jaw joint pain often occurs due to improper tooth contacts or poor jaw alignment.
- Where there are stronger tooth contacts or contacts only on certain teeth, those teeth have a poor long-term prognosis. This is because forces are improperly distributed to the supporting structures of the teeth, leading to their deterioration, loosening, and trauma.
- Poor bite alignment often results in chewing disorders.
The permanent solution to all problems with crooked teeth is fixed braces.

WHEN ELSE ARE FIXED BRACES USED?
Fixed braces are often used in pre-prosthetic preparation, where after orthodontic treatment, metal-free crowns are placed. They are also used to create space for dental implants or to avoid implants by moving teeth into ideal positions.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF PLANNING AND APPLYING FIXED BRACES?

The first and essential step is a clinical examination, where it’s mandatory to bring an orthopantomogram and a lateral cephalometric X-ray.

Impressions of the upper and lower jaw are taken. After a detailed analysis of the models and X-rays, we determine if any interventions are needed before applying the braces, such as fillings, tooth extractions (usually wisdom teeth or sometimes premolars), or pre-treatment with removable appliances.

If the orthodontist decides that no additional interventions are needed, we schedule the brace placement, typically within 5 days.

During your appointment, the entire process takes about an hour. Brackets can be metal or ceramic, determining whether the braces will be metal or aesthetic.
WHAT ARE REMOVABLE BRACES?
Unlike fixed braces, which are active 24/7 and cannot be removed, removable braces can be taken out. They are mainly used for younger patients with mixed dentition, during the active growth phase.
This is the best time to influence jaw growth, as the appliance stimulates proper development.
Since there are different colors and designs of braces, children are often highly motivated to wear them—even if it may not seem that way to parents. This makes it easier to explain that, although removable, the appliance should be worn for as many hours as possible during the day. To achieve the desired results, we recommend wearing it throughout the night and at least 5 hours during the day.
Removable braces used as pre-treatment can significantly shorten the time needed for fixed braces.

WANT INVISIBLE BRACES (AESTHETIC FIXED BRACES)?
Introducing Invisalign, one of the most modern systems for teeth straightening—transparent aligners that adjust teeth. This system, popularized in the U.S. 20 years ago, leverages digital technology for precise results.
After diagnosis and impressions, models are scanned, and computer simulations determine tooth movements. Patients receive a set of aligners (typically 7-10 per jaw) to change at home as teeth shift.
The patient receives a set of aligners (typically 7-10 per jaw), which they change at home as they notice tooth movement. The biggest advantage of these aligners is that they allow for much better oral hygiene compared to fixed braces, are virtually invisible, and reduce the need for frequent dental visits.
However, while effective for minor adjustments, they are not a complete replacement for fixed braces.
Aligners should be worn all night and as much as possible during the day.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FIXED BRACES
How do you maintain oral hygiene with braces?
Maintaining oral hygiene with fixed braces requires a bit more time, but patients quickly adapt because they are motivated by the fast, visible results. Hygiene must be impeccable. All you need to do is follow our instructions, use additional brushes designed specifically for fixed braces alongside your regular toothbrushes, as well as supplementary tools like a water flosser.
How long does fixed braces treatment last?
The duration of treatment, or the time wearing braces, varies depending on the severity of the deformity, to a lesser extent on the patient’s age, and on individual response to the therapy. On average, treatment lasts from 1 to 3 years.
Does getting fixed braces hurt?
The placement of braces is absolutely painless. Mild discomfort or, more accurately, temporary unpleasant sensations may occur a day or two after the braces are fitted and after wire adjustments during check-ups.
What happens after removing fixed braces?
After removing fixed braces, it is mandatory to wear retention aligners, or retainers, usually for the same duration as the braces were worn. Retainers stabilize the teeth that have been moved with the braces and ensure the longevity of the results, making it extremely important to wear them.
Is there an age limit?
No, there is no age limit.
